Interesting!

The 7 Most Overrated Businesses

By Kelly K. Spors and Kevin Salwen

With roughly 6.7 million jobs lost since the start of the recession, it's tempting - and often a great idea - to launch your own business. That way, of course, you can take matters into your own hands. No more rolling your eyes at the boss; it's your show.

But many people do a lousy job of picking businesses they can realistically turn into a profitable operation.

"There's this very sad pattern about how people start businesses," says Scott Shane, an entrepreneurship professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. "People are most likely to start businesses in industries where start-ups are most likely to fail."

The problem: Many would-be entrepreneurs are drawn to businesses they like to patronize or the ones that are cheapest and easiest to start. Instead, experts argue, aspiring entrepreneurs should create firms in which they have professional experience so they have a competitive advantage in the market.

So, what are most overrated businesses out there? We spoke with small business experts to find out. Here are seven you might want to think twice about - and then maybe twice more.

1. Restaurants. Dining out and cooking are among Americans' favorite pastimes. But "restaurants are among the toughest businesses to run," says Donna Ettenson, vice president of the Association of Small Business Development Centers in Burke, Va.

Far too many people assume their culinary abilities will lead to success in the restaurant business. Instead, about 60% of restaurants close in the first three years, according to a 2003 study at Ohio State University. That's quite a bit higher than the roughly half of all start-ups that close in the first five years.

The reason: Restaurants typically have low profit margins and need strong managers who can run an ultra-tight ship through seasonal fluctuations and other struggles. Most people don't have that kind of intense managerial ability to pull it off. By the way, the pitfalls are quite similar for restaurants' cousin – the catering business. In other words, Chef Emptor.

2. Direct Sales. It's a tempting pitch: Work from home and earn commissions by selling cosmetics, kitchen knives or cleaning products. But companies that recruit independent sales reps tend to attract new team members by pointing to the success of their highest earners.

A harder look shows that those high earners are making big money in large part by recruiting new reps into the organization and getting bonuses or a cut of their recruits' commissions, says Ken Yancey, chief executive of SCORE, a Herndon, Va., organization of current and retired business executives who volunteer time counseling entrepreneurs. The new reps then have a much harder job because they need to recruit more people on top of selling product even though the number of reps out there is increasing.

The result, Yancey says: "Most of them wind up with a bunch of jewelry or kitchen equipment sitting in their basement that they can't sell."

3. Online Retail. By far, one of the easiest businesses to start is selling items through online marketplaces such as eBay or Amazon. But as online commerce ages and these sites fill up with more established retailers, it's much harder for new, small sellers to compete for attention and generate a viable income.

"A lot of people are thinking it's the Web of five or 10 years ago and you stand out simply because you're on the Web," says Rieva Lesonsky, chief executive of GrowBiz Media, a content and consulting company for small businesses based in Irvine, Calif.

Instead, successful online retailers today must have a handle on sourcing their products at a low enough price, then layering on clever online marketing and fine-tuned logistics. These businesses won't generate much income if they can't be easily found in searches, maintain a good reputation among buyers or add enough value so that sellers can build profit margins high enough to take on bigger players and physical stores.

4. High-End Retail. Many people dream of opening a day spa, luxury jewelry store or designer clothing boutique – businesses they feel good patronizing. But specialty retail businesses close at higher rates than non-specialty stores, according to the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy, and are even riskier now that consumer discretionary spending has dried up and people are no longer spending money on little luxuries.

"It's going to be a long time before we return to the days of conspicuous consumption," says Ms. Lesonsky of GrowBiz Media. High-end retailers often suffer from poor locations and lack of understanding of how to source and market their products in an effective way. In today's economy and in coming years, she says, retail entrepreneurs should be looking to sell non-discretionary consumer goods or offer items at a value rather than high-end products.

5. Independent Consulting. Common advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to stick with industries they know. So, for many looking to escape the corporate treadmill that means turning their professional expertise into a one-person consulting firm.

It seems practical – more companies are indeed relying on independent contractors and freelancers these days – but it's not as easy to pull off as many imagine, says Dennis Ceru, an entrepreneurship professor at Babson College in Babson Park, Mass. Many consultants struggle with time management problems, spending so much time scouting work that it's very difficult to earn steady income. "The difficulty many face is they go through peaks and valleys of having work," says Prof. Ceru. "When the engagement ends, they are frantically looking for work," which may take weeks or months.

A possible solution: "A successful consulting firm needs people to find the work, grind out the work and mind the work. Unless you know you can do all three yourself, you potentially expose your business to great risk."

6. Franchise Ownership. The idea of being handed a proven business plan without the uncertainties and headaches that come with building a business from scratch is understandably alluring. But too many people don't understand the risks associated with franchising and sign restrictive franchise agreements without thoroughly researching their franchisor and their contractual obligations, says SCORE's Yancey.

Some franchisors, for instance, allow franchisees to open stores too close together, oversaturating the market. Or they simply require their franchisees pay so much in royalties and fees or other operational costs that it's very difficult to be profitable. Beyond that, when a franchisee fails, a franchisor may make it extremely difficult and costly to get out of its contract.

It's a myth that franchises are far more successful than independent businesses. A 1995 study by a researcher at Wayne State University found that 62% of franchises were open for business after four years, compared with 68% of independent businesses. And franchises were also found to be less profitable in those early years.

7. Traffic-Driven Web Sites. Everybody has witnessed the success of social-networking sites like Facebook and popular blogs that generate all their revenue off advertising. But as the Internet ages, that's much harder to accomplish, says Martin Zwilling, a start-up consultant in Fountain Hills, Ariz., who specializes in helping entrepreneurs find angel investors.

Zwilling says he hears pitches for new social-networking sites about once a week, but actively deters people from starting them. "I say, skip it," he says. "You need to invest $50 million to get any presence" in the social-networking space right now and it's very difficult to get people to leave established sites. What's more, he says, the amount of traffic needed to build a lucrative traffic-driven Web site is far more than most new Web entrepreneurs realize: "Until you get to the point where you have a million page views a day, you're nowhere.

Perfect Cali Apparel

Yes this is great for Californians simply because the light weight material and its very easy to wear. Riviera Club based in Santa Barbara know what is up and what we need.
rivieraclothing.com available this spring!

The debut LP from the San Francisco two-piece composed of Christopher Owens and Chet "J.R." White is the guitar-based equivalent of an M83 album, filled with the sort of gauzy, post-Summer anthems that could rival cold beer as the primary spark of raspy sing-alongs and one-night stands.
And the best part is… Whether it has something to do with the creepy cult upbringing
of singer-songwriter Christopher Owens or just the sheer quantities of drugs the band is rather frank about consuming, the duo's video are perfect distillations of the adolescence you wish you'd had.

Alejandro Ingelmo! Finally, working only in the women's department he finally realized that there are men that could use a good pair of shoes with a nice fitted suit. Dunks are getting old! These high top metallic shoes are pretty amazing. There's double stitching, piping, and details that we have yet to see. The red ones makes me ponder!

Amazing

How about my day just cause!

My day started out so gnarly today. First my alarm clock went off at 530am to get ready to go hit the streets (school) and I was pretty excited. But all of a sudden I turned off my alarm clock but snoozed in my dream some how?lol And then came the dream where I was in the shower and getting ready but in reality I was still asleep...Haha until a slip in the shower, in my dream that woke me up. "HOLY CRAP WTF!?" it was 715 and my class starts at 8, so now what. I thought I shouldn't shower but no I have too then i'll feel weird and cold lol...So i took like a 115 second shower. But that 115 second shower was not the crazy part but that my right arm was numb!lol how the hell... I tired everything, put it in the ay ayer like Flo-rida, waving it and wetting it, but it just tingled and felt heavy and useless because out of that minute and so seconds, 80 was shampooing my hair. Then I got out and thought " I can't wear what I was suppose to wear because I can even fix my hair, plus all of my jeans were on the floor and that was overwhelming kind of...HA. So I just grabbed random pair of jeans and one of my Vicarious By Nature(GO GREEN!) t-shirt plus trucker hat and took off...Then I was like, cool I'm just cruising now! Right... My sister was blocking my car! I was like WTH! Then I had to move it parked in kind of in my neighbors drive way ran back and left... And I left my phone... But then I just started laughing because I hate starting off my day MR. NEGGY! Plus what was ahead of me was hand ballet "pattern draping " so that was cool. Driving if I was 17 again (not the movie) I made it to school with 7 minutes to spare! YES!!!!

Gnarly!

Apart from Zanerobe which has really cool tees for men, the surf inspired Warrior of Radness is stepping up to the plat I'd say. With a really chill collection Rick Klotz, the line’s founder and designer also has a line of wool muscle pants trouser lenght board shorts. I can't wait to get the shirt that is pictured via u.p.s!

Girls Girls are crazy!

LOL... Its so funny because my friend just asked me if I seen pictures of her friend with his new new friend (girl) lol... And she's like "look at the girl he is with, so nasty" and she is really good friends with this guy but I do not understand why she called me just to dog on the girl...ha... I mean it is entertaining but after all was said, I asked "why, are you jealous?" haha and she looked at me like Noo but that Noo you better not tell anyone..lol But its funny because she never gave this guy the time of day at all, but yet somehow they were just good friends even though he was crazy about her. She said NO! Now she is tempted to eat a fruit of another !!haha... So I guess guys that girls will come around and around just hold tight...dont be a creep! or try not to!And dont say "F U then" if they dont respond to you ahahah be nice! like myself!:)

Motivation is Key!

Quotes by JD from Scrubs is the reason why I watch the show. Here are a few that i liked.
"I guess the key to a lot of things is balance. Whether it’s balance of power, balance in love, or sometimes just balance. For some of us, it seems too far out of reach, too difficult to achieve. But the important thing is just to never stop trying"

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately about taking chances …and how it’s really just about overcoming your fears. Because the truth is, every time you take a big risk in your life, no matter how it ends up, you’re always glad you took it.”

“Sometimes the only way to take a really good look at yourself is through someone else’s eyes.”

“Maybe it’s about finding the little things that get you through the day. Whether it’s the support of someone close to you… ...or letting yourself feel overwhelmed… ...if only for a moment. Or being selfless every once in a while. I don’t know. I guess, in the end, it’s about surviving…...any way you can.”

“I think the one thing we never stop looking for is acceptance.
Acceptance of our own shortcomings…
...Acceptance that some things are gonna be what they’re gonna be.”

After taking a life shower (yoga) you can read one of these!haha

Walking into my room with a smile :)

Why?? Because I am going to be on my juki DDL 555 daily! Not that I didn't use it this past summer I made a few dresses but instead of doing a bunch of boring reading that I do not like this semester I am going to be doing this!

Oh yeah this was back in the day where I all of a sudden I found a new infatuation with this finger print fabric. So much I made like 5 tote bags and even had it on my wrist!

Good Monday!lol

So today was actually my Pattern drafting class not appare lconstruction (thats on Wednesday) and it went great. I also liked that we got straight to work, no time wasted and made a block for the mannequin size 10. My teacher is chill as well and does not beat around the bush. I really look forward to this semester and can not wait to start manifesting my ideas into garments!

"Size 10 Thanks!"

Like honestly I think my Vans collection is going to get replaced by SeaVees, simply because they look more sophisticate with Suede and BF Goodrich Soles. Plus Vans don't come with a spec card... Maybe thats why they cost $110 @ seevees.com!

Sunday Fun day...

Unfortunately I was fortunate to work on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. The bad part is the very odd hours I'm working 2pm to 7pm! But the good thing is at least I am working a social gathering and the people are really cool and I am out in the sun!

However I am excited and really looking forward for tomorrow morning because it is going to be my first day in apparel construction! YES!!!!!

Duck Season???

Air Max and LL bean mash up? Not too in love with the idea but hey they look to be very comfortable right...? This actually reminds my of the Nike Dunk boat shoe which looks ridiculous in my opinion but who am I to judge lol.

(Bottom) I actually like the LL bean duck boot if you will, more original and less expensive. At around $80-$90 and Nike mash up at $180 at Saks!

Fall Fashion and stuff

Neil Krug via Polaroid deadstock created a bad ass picture...pulpartbook.com if your into photography and good stuff!
Carefree look that is very popular by Adam Kimmel finally other designers are trying to catch up to him!
A pair of leg covers and Redwing boots...Hmm..Ill take it! But ill keep the leg warmers for cold early mornings and use the boots casually. They are awesome and the price I say is fairly pricey at $375 (handcrafted) after all they are heavy duty and sure to last, think long term people!... You can get the leg warmers at yoshijilyamamoto.co.jp and the RedWings for Jcrew at jcrew.com ...

Im not sure about this although is it pretty cool but does it get that cold that you need an alaskan sweater? Kanye sure does but he's not the only one trying to get his fingerprints on the wilderness, Designer Patrick Robinson(Gap) is too. Honestly after taking a look at this for a few minutes I would buy one but this would be an impulse buy. To me that means I'd take it home put it in my closet them magically one day bring it out and say
"dude this hella goes with this" and make a legit fit, but it wont be like buying a pair of Hudson jeans and thinking I can not wait to rock these!

Ever since Clarks came out those were the first brand that came to mind when I thought of blucher mocs or whenever I saw someone wearing them. Now they are so popular even LL bean is making them I thought they only made backpacks lol...But this makes me happy because aside from Clarks, Ralph Lauren, A.P.C, LL Bean and Common Projects are now making them as well. But the brand I am looking forward to getting is Vans by Taka Hayashi! Can you guess which out of these for are the Vans????All the way to the right. They actually are pretty good looking and can get them for $130 which is reasonable simply because they went out of their way to make casual dress shoes rather then more skate shoes. But I am for sure going to get those when I find them!

London Calling

The British are coming! The first leg of the Wish You Were Here swap—a fashion exchange program in which 15 of Carnaby Street's indie boutiques trade places with their Lower East Side brethren—pops up here on Orchard Street tomorrow. (The 2,000-square-foot emporium will be followed by a similar one in the U.K. this October.) What'll you find?Carnaby Street may not be the Mod haven it once was, but there are still some decidedly rakish options. Polka-dot and repp stripe ties from Peckham Rye, preppy standards liked a piped gingham-check blazer by Hurwundeki, and the Savile Row-on-acid tailoring of Social Suicide, whose Technicolor paint-and-patch-laden jackets (pictured)—moreLondon '09 than '69—are cut from blocks used by the late, great Row reinvigorator Tommy Nutter. That's a proud tradition to uphold. Nutter's suits and his pun-ready but nevertheless iconic House of Nutterwere hallmarks of Carnaby's first big go-round. Need proof? Three out of four of the Beatles are wearing Nutter suits on the iconic cover of Abbey Road. (The outlier? Denim-clad George, bringing up the rear.)

-Cheers

Glit Groupe

Everyone loves a bargain and especially if it's high end Couture clothing ,anywhere from Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Edun Clothing, Nudie, Acne, Filippa K and Dolce Gabbana and lots more. Gilt Groupe offers discount prices and what is really good about it is if they do not have your size you can get wait listed and they can get it for you within a few days. If only Nordstrom Rack did that right! Anywho this site is really great and they have men's shoes and women's wear as well, so if you want to get invited I can do the honers!
-Cheers

"Insomnia!" Lets talk hair...

Now as a guy that wants to create clothes for men I am often obeserving what they have on. (No Homo) Im honestly a hair guy ever since I can remember I think my whole line of male family members are, for pete sake my uncle looks like Uncle Jesse from Full House and my older brother also carries a nice set of hair. But sometimes there are guys who seem to careless what their hair looks like and just avoid dealing with it. I had a friend in college who always had a flat top. One day he came by the dorm and he had very long hair, no shape no texture just hair and I said "dude what with your hair" he was my friend and he responded that he wanted a fowhawk! I dont cut hair but I did then all of a sudden; it actually came out id say 8 out of 10 and he looked very different and I can even say he looked handsome. He was ready to hit the street and get numbers! Hair can make a man or break a man honestly, its like seeing a girl wearing a pony tail all the time constantly. So here are a few pictures of mens 2009 hair trends.
All fashion trends are cyclical, and in recent years have gradually modernized the looks of the 20th Century and planted them firmly in the 21st. And so too it is with men's: it's out with the new, and in with the old. Or at least an old hair style with a new twist.

1st day of apparel textiles and design sketch

So today was my first day of class; Friday right? At 8am... But nothing wakes me up so well then a good tea spoon of fashion early in the morning . I was pretty excited driving to school because I knew that being back in the fashion environment will inspire me and get me excited for the future. Again I was one of 4 guys in the class full of girls :) which is a really good thing because in a way the teacher probably underestimate the guys in the class, which is understandable because the garments that we make in class are for a women's body. Aside from the I really can not wait to start manifesting my ideas on paper then to patterns then fibers! I will take pictures of all my garments and have you critique it!

-Cheers
2010 will be an exciting year for fashion; experts predict that we'll emerge from the global financial crisis and, as a result, we can expect to see a new standard of fashion emerge. Introducing 2010 fashion. Classically inspired but with a serious infusion of the sex and skin, this is what we'll be wearing in 2010.
I honestly thought this trend never expired in the first place!

About my blog

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! This is my first time ever blogging and simply inspired to start one because everyone tells me I should and also to make friends out in the fashion industry and in the world. The reason why I named my blog "bloke fashion identity" is because I am a inspired fashion designer and going to school for that to move on up. Honestly I waited to long to do what I actually wanted to do. I went to a private university for a year and figured by the time I graduated I would be in depth until I was middle aged. So I left and took a year of art and now fashion design and in it for the long haul. So thats a little about me hopefully I can make this a daily thing and make friends!

Cheers!
